Journey

Through Time

A Journey from Emancipation to Escape from Oppression

1865 - 1877

Reconstruction

Also known as the era of rebuilding, Reconstruction marked one of the most transformative—and turbulent—periods in American history. It was the nation’s first great experiment in interracial democracy and the largest political, social, and economic restructuring effort following the Civil War.

1916 - 1970

The Great Migration

Sometimes known as the Great Northward Migration or the Black Migration, it was the largest movement of people in American history — a massive relocation of over six million African Americans from the rural South to cities in the North, Midwest, and West between 1916 and 1970.
